Another Saturday, another postponement. It looks as if the season will last into May. Our match at Leigh was one of two casualties in our division last weekend. Coincidentally, the other match involved our next opponents, Tyldesley, who were due at Glossop.
So this weekend, Anselmians are hoping to visit Lancashire, this time to play Leigh’s near neighbours, Tyldesley, in our second attempt to play at St. George’s Park. Our game in mid-December was called off late on the Saturday, but not before team and supporters had travelled.
In an early warning of recent poor weather, the “Beast from the East Lancashire Road” made sure that the pitch was unplayable.
“The Bongs” visited Eastham in September for our first home game, and it produced one of the more entertaining fixtures this season. Anselmians prevailed 23-10, but many Saints supporters were impressed by the organisation of the promoted side.
Tyldesley are currently seventh, having won ten and lost nine of their games.
They have had some impressive results, not least winning at champions-elect, Broughton Park, by a single point, 34-35, on the day that Anselmians were edging ahead at Bowdon 12-13. The rest of their scores are predictable, but amongst their defeats is a 19-43 reverse at home to Southport.
Indeed, while St. George’s Park is a difficult place to win at, Glossop and Liverpool St. Helens have both been successful in their visits this season.
Anselmians will want to re-establish their push for promotion with a win, but they will realise that Tyldesley, as well as any side they have met this term, can play the same expansive game the Saints are developing. It promises to be an absorbing contest.
If the weather permits.
