Fresh and young new face puts pen to paper at Hurst Cross

I can't wait for the league to start now
- Joel Melia, Striker

Things move quickly in the Non-League game and after pacey winger Joel Melia impressed during the Robins pre-season campaign, Paul Phillips and Steve Halford thought it right to offer their summer signing a 12-month-contract on Wednesday evening. Melia duly agreed, ensuring that the whiz-kid would commit his future to life at Hurst Cross throughout the up-coming 2015-16 campaign.

Coming to the club from Barnoldswick Town in June, the versatile attacker holds an esteemed reputation as North West Counties Player of the Season. Being one of the most sought after names in the game, Melia has become one of the Robin’s prized assets and now looks set to play a starring role in the club’s promotion push during the months to come.

Combining quick feet, an eye for goal and breath taking speed, Melia has quickly endeared himself to the Robin’s loyal fan base. Now one of the first names on the team sheet, the wide man is just 48 hours away from making his debut in the eighth tier, as he explained why he believes he is now ready to make the step up in class while donning the famous Red and White club jersey.

“I’m more than happy to sign a contract at the club as I am enjoying my time here so far. It obviously shows that the managers and club are happy with what I have shown.

Melia continued by saying; “I have plenty more to offer for the up-coming season and I’m really excited for the big kick-off against Mickleover Sports this weekend.”

Being one of the youngest members in a relatively experienced squad, Melia has found his place in the squad’s dynamics as he has learnt from the older statesman currently plying their trade at Hurst Cross.

Now comfortable and familiar with his surroundings, the speed demon is focused on making his potential competitive debut for the club this weekend, with three points and an impressive performance firmly on his agenda after a confidence building pre-season campaign.
“I feel that I am settling in very well now at Hurst Cross. I’m getting to know each and every member of the squad lads and things are good on the field and in the dressing room at Ashton United.
“I can't wait for the league to start now, I feel like I am ready to show what I can do on this stage and I will hopefully be getting a lot of game time. The team is very strong now so hopefully we can start with three points.”
