It is with sadness that we have to report the passing of one of our senior members, Bernard Gowing

Bernard, who passed away last Thursday aged 88, entered KEGS Aston in the first intake after the 2nd World War in 1946.

In his 6th form years, he was fortunate to witness first hand the outstanding 1st XV who won 28, and drew 1 of their 30 matches -amassing 769 points and conceding just 46 - the only loss was to an AOE XV. The side contained 3 schoolboy Internationals, half-backs John Murray and Barry Mordike, and 2nd Row Carter. 2 more were to follow the next season, Gerry Manders and Jim Hullah.

Bernard was a keen sportsman, and was a regular participant in the Aston Old Edwardians Golf Championship. He was also a fervent supporter of AOE RFC, and was a regular spectator, usually with son Nigel, until ill health prevented him from attending in just the last couple of years. He was also a devoted England fan, and undertook many trips with Nigel to matches at both Twickenham and also overseas.

Bernard served time on Association committees, including a spell as Secretary between 2 other great servants of AOE, Alan Haynes and Simon Pinhey.

Funeral details will be posted in due course, but in the meantime, all at AOE send their condolences to Bernard's family and friends in their loss.
