Axminster Town AFC History

Axminster Town AFC History

Axminster Town were founded in 1903, playing their home games at Gravelpit Lane. They started life in the Perry St Junior League (now Premier Division), winning the league for the first time in 1911-12. In the 1920’s the Axminster side were regarded by many as the greatest set of players to pull on the amber & black shirts. This side dominated local football. In 1921 the club brought & moved to the current home ground of Sector Lane.

Over the years Axminster have always been a very well supported club, both home & away. In the early days crowds of over 1000 were common place.

The club moved to the Exeter & District League Senior 1 in 1952, & won the league. This resulted in promotion to the Premier Division. The league was very competitive & after several seasons the club slipped back down the leagues, returning to the Perry St league in 1972. In 2001 the club moved back to the Devon & Exeter League & stormed through the leagues and in 2004 were promoted to the Premier Division. The Premier Division title was won in 2006-07 and the club were promoted as Champions to become founder members of the new South West Peninsula League Division 1 East, Level 7 in the pyramid

The clubs ambitions are clearly stated to bring as high a level of football as possible to Axminster. With this in mind the club are looking to move to Cloakham Lawns, where a new state of the art stadium will be build.
