2014 Pink Cup Winners - Birstall Vic U14 Girls

Birstall Victoria19 Aug 2014 - 15:20

Saturday saw the Bulldogs host an afternoon of Rugby League as girls from all over Yorkshire competed for The Pink Cup

as part of the Batley Bulldogs 'In the Pink' weekend raising money for Breast Cancer Charities. The Pink Cup is a tribute to all the strong women who have battled and are battling Cancer, and although it only made it's debut at the weekend, it is hopefully the start of a long running tradition and will be played for annually. The tournament included local sides from Birstall Victoria and Shaw Cross competing against East Leeds and Hunslet Hawks.

After a fantastic afternoon of rugby league it was Birstall Victoria Girls (Under 14's) that won the first Batley Bulldogs Pink Cup. They beat East Leeds and a combined Hunslet/Shaw Cross team respectively.

Birstall Girls Under 12s also played as a curtain raiser to the tournament running out 28-20 winners against East Leeds. The try scorers for the Vic were standout players Caitlin Beevers and Ellie Frain. There were solid games from Jess Hartley and Pheobe Forde. Maisie Brearley and Bethany Dyson were lively throughout with Mya Taylor and Martha Bradley making a number of good runs. Georgia Boocock in her first ever game showed good pace. The 12s are really bonding well in their first season and showed a lot of heart to grind a win out against a much bigger side.

The Birstall Vic Under 14's first game was against the combined Shaw Cross/Hunslet team running out 36-0 winners in a game that was much tougher than the score line suggests. In the second game against East Leeds Birstall won 44-6. In both games the teams were well led by captain Evie kilburn with half backs Millie Taylor and Casey Rhodes pushing the team around all afternoon.

Madison Laverick and Lea Dixon were outstanding for the Vic and Lily Clark ran aggressively in both games. Becky Jackson and Georgia Halliley continued their progress with some strong running and defence. Emma Willans in her first game played her part in the wins as did Ellie McNamara who was back to her best.

Hannah Hartley was unlucky not to score making half breaks in both games. Ellie Frain and Caitlin Beevers also had good moments. The Vic were delighted to only concede one try in two games with team spirit again shining through. The Vic's scorers in both games were Dixon, Laverick, Taylor, Rhodes, Clark, McNamara, Kilburn and Beevers with Beevers and Rhodes adding goals.

The final game of the competition saw Shawcross beat East Leeds 24-20 thanks to an excellent full length try from Alisha Senior.

We would like to thank all the teams who took part in the competition; The Nottingham Building Society for sponsoring the match balls which were raffled off after the tournament; Wilby's Builders Merchants for sponsoring the tournament officials and Batley Boys Under 12s for sponsoring the pink cup.

Finally, huge thanks go to the referees Jack Broadbent and Liam Rush who not only donated their match fees to the charity, they also officiated the entire tournament wearing pink tutus.
