Brighouse Town made the short journey to Ossett Albion on Tuesday evening and bagged themselves another win, making it two from two in their debut season at the foot of the non-league pyramid system.
It was in no way an easy win for Brighouse, especially with many key players out but Paul Quinn's men pulled together and dug deep to get the right result!
Brighouse were starting on a disadvantage, playing uphill, against the wind and a low summer evening's sun in their eyes.
Town's first attack on Albion's goal came on ten minutes with a cross from Adam Field into the box which was then scissor -icked by Danny Naidole but the keeper, Adam Rhodes cleared the danger.
A minute later and Dean Bartle's attack on the Town goal was punched out by Jacob Giles, but the ball fell to centre forward Dale Kelly and his shot hit the foot of Giles' far post while he was rooted to the spot.
Town's first goal came on 16 minutes with only their third attack on Albion 's goal, Ernest Boafo, twisting and turning and beating keeper Rhodes after good work up the right by Field and Ryan Hall. This had come after several vociferous promptings from their manager, Paul Quinn who had named himself on the bench.
In the 22nd minute Albion threatened the Town goal again when Kelly shot across the face of goal with Giles looking beaten. The home side were really looking to take advantage of the sloping pitch in their 445 minutes and were breaking Town down in midfield and launching the ball back towards their target.
In the 37th minute the lively and skilful Kelly sent another ball just wide of the Town goal. The visitors were guilty of not clearing the ball quick enough given the pitch and were on several occasions caught out with blocks which then saw the ball bounce away in favour of Albion . However, they saw out the first half and took a one goal lead into the dressing rooms.
It was just a minute into the second half with Town playing down the slope that they doubled their score. Hall had a shot blocked and the ball fell for Shaquille Clarke-Adams, who was impressing on his starting debut, alongside Ben Thornton, and with a toe-poke he beat keeper Rhodes to the ball and made it 2-0.
Within five minutes Boafo just headed wide from a corner and Naidole had a shot parried wide.
Albion pulled one back when Kelly put the ball in but Giles saved, but from the fallout Kurtis Noble followed up and made it 2-1. Game on and with a 200 hardcore of support, Town knew it!
In the 64th minute Joe Jagger, as Town responded well, sent in a long, hard shot but it hit the crossbar. Hall was following up but the linesman's flag had gone up for offside.
Town brought fresh legs on in the 70th minute with Jagger being replaced by Craig Thompson. He then proceeded to work his socks off leading the line on his own,.while at the other end the Town goal had a few narrow escapes as Field, Leon Henry, Adam Wilson and James Hurtley defended with vigour and pride.
With ten minutes to go, Town benched the hardworking Hall and brought on Isaac Baldwin for his debut and the teenager produced a mature performance that was later praised by his manager.
In the 84th minute Hurtley was shown a yellow card after his touchline tackle on Adam Muller.
With a couple of minutes to go Town missed a wide open goal as keeper Rhodes came out and Thompson fired a shot in but it went over the crossbar. The same player, who was taking the ball into the corner flag with Baldwin to wind down the clock also just managed to get a toe onto a ball and beat Rhodes but agonisingly as the ball rolled towards goal the keeper got back to save on the line.
Into extra time and Boafo beat off six in and around the box to take a shot on goal but couldn't quite finish but it was job done and another win for Town.
