The RESTORATIVE POWER of an opportune time out

Despite six weeks of training and a little competition called the Ken Galluccio Cup (which we came fourth in, lest we forget!), Capital had a few nerves going into their first league game of the season, as the Edinburgh 2nds team looked like they could be a pretty handy outfit on pitch.

Capital were right to have their reservations, as straight from the draw Edinburgh had a stunning start and bagged themselves an early goal through their nifty centre. Edinburgh continued in this vein, and repeatedly took apart the Capital defence scoring a further three unanswered goals, all within the first 10 minutes of the match. With Capital staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat, Captain Rout called a time out and resolved to shake out the early anxiety consuming the team. Boy, did it work - with tactics discussed, pep restored and rallying rhetoric delivered, Capital did what Maverick did best in Top Gun and ruddy re-engaged!

Adam was the first to take up the initiative as he stormed through the Edinburgh defence and got a cracking goal back at the start of a blistering twenty minutes for Capital. Further goals followed from Tanz, Colin (making his Capital debut - please come back!), Fred, Gatwick and Adam again. Confidence grew on the back of the quick fire goal barrage and galvanised the team. The remainder of the first half might not have been pretty to watch but it was effective, and after being caught on the hop, Capital found themselves with a two goal lead at half time.

In the second half, Capital picked up where they left off. Edinburgh started to make errors with ground balls and catches, as Capital continued to keep the score board ticking over. An immense clear from keeper Dave deep into the Edinburgh half was superbly collected by Colin and followed up by a super individual goal.

Any attacking play from Edinburgh was quickly shut down by the Capital defence. Gill, Milly, Amie, Emma, Louisa and Laura formed a robust defensive unit, with excellent red calls and double teams (plus some excellent saves from GK Dave) stopping the attack in their tracks and limiting the home team to only a trio of goals. At the other end of the field, further wizard goals came from Tanz, Adam and Dave, including an epic goal from Fred scored from the tightest and most improbable of angles and not forgetting that wonder goal from Milly after a storming drive from defence. At full time, the score, despite the shaky start, ended up 14-8 in Capital's favour with the league title defence off to a solid start!

Special mentions go to Colin and Louisa for their Capital debuts; to Courtney for her epic and natural transformation into an attacking wing, and not forgetting Captain SFK for her opportune and gladiatorial time out, which saved the game for Capital. Great work guys!

A big thanks also goes out to Gatwick and Laura for stepping in and umpiring for us, after our efforts to get an umpire proved fruitless.

Man of the Match went to Adam for kick starting the team reboot plus his tireless work rate, his carving up of the Edinburgh defence, some masterful draw work and plethora of goals. Epic work Ginger!
