Who can play rugby with you?
Everybody! Chesham Rugby Club run three senior men’s sides, a women’s team, and have a thriving mini and junior section.
More information about the club’s individual sections can be found by following the links above.
Why should I play rugby?
Rugby is a game with something for everyone. It is totally inclusive for all shapes, sizes, interests and abilities.
The core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship are just five of the great reasons to get involved with rugby. As is the post-game socialising…
What can Chesham Rugby Club offer me?
A core idea underpins all sections of the club – ‘If you want a game, you get a game’.
We offer the largest menu of rugby available in the area with rugby for boys, girls, women and men as well as touch rugby in the summer and we are about to launch a social walking rugby side. Plus, we are determined that everybody plays; whatever their ability.
We offer reasonable membership fees, competitive rugby, high class coaching, and great facilities. We aim to spread the good word of Rugby Union, and get as many people in the community involved as we can. We’re not known as ‘ Bucks Friendliest Rugby Club ’ for nothing!
Who are your coaches?
The minis and juniors have a large number of qualified coaches, all of whom volunteer their time. They are supported by heaps of experienced helpers to keep things in check!
All our coaches have the appropriate qualifications and certification, and are overseen by our Club Coaching Coordinator.
We’re also very proud to see many of our young senior players involved with the mini and junior rugby section, whether coaching or just helping out. They’re giving back to the club that have provided them with enjoyment, skills, and friends. That’s what it’s all about right?
When do you train?
Our men train on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and our women on Wednesdays, all start at 7pm.
Our minis and juniors train and play on Sunday mornings.
Where are you based?
We are based at The Chiltern Hills Academy.
What facilities do you have?
We have everything a good rugby club needs; well-maintained pitches, a floodlit training area.
Having completed our own purpose built clubhouse in 2019 after many years in sheds, tents and containers we are now firmly at home in our ”Future Building” This has 4 changing rooms a kitchen, bar, club shop and social area. We also have use of the Artificial Grass Pitch located at Chiltern Hills Academy which is great for all weather/year round training.
I’ve heard you're called ‘The Stags’, what’s that all about?
We don’t really know, although it may have something to do with a Stag being part of the Chesham town logo. That or the fact that the club was established in a pub, possibly after a few too many refreshments…
What do you do for the community?
When it comes to community activities we can stand proud and hold our heads high. Our community activities last summer included participating in the Schools of Chesham Carnival, organising and running the Chesham Sports Festival and expanding our summer touch rugby league to ten teams.
Our free youth coaching in local schools is ongoing and is extremely popular.
How long have you been around?
Chesham Rugby Club was established on October 22nd 1981 in The Red Lion, Chesham, Bucks.
Councillor John Downes announced that the town of Chesham would now have a Rugby Club and the meeting was open for further discussion on the broader policies of the club and its future.
It was also decided at this meeting that the club should be known as 'The Stags' and that it should endeavour to be known as 'Buck's Friendliest Rugby Club'. The name has stuck, and we have never forgotten how to be friendly.
At the meeting Councillor Downes proclaimed; “I can think of no greater honour than that of playing for one’s town”. The club still consists of many local players, but we’ve also drawn in plenty of members from wider reaches. No doubt they have been attracted by our ‘unique’ outlook and inclusive qualities.
We are proud to be a Buckinghamshire based rugby club.
So why are you known as ‘Buck's Friendliest Rugby Club’?
Because we think we are. Chesham Rugby Club have never subscribed to the ‘pay and play’ culture that has infiltrated many clubs. The idea that members would simply vanish after a game or training and not take part in the social activities that follow has always been unthinkable.
You’re always going to be made welcome at Chesham Rugby Club, and as you can see by our members, we’re a pretty diverse and accommodating bunch.
So you socialise a lot then?
Oh yes…tours, trips, theme days, barbeques and dinners. Plus, of course; a good post-match pint.
