It has been a week to remember for Corwen Girls, as they collected three titles in the space of two days.
Thursday night saw the Under 12 Girls squad travel to Llandudno Junction, knowing a win would seal the North Wales Girls League title, and they didn't disappoint. They saved one of their best displays of the season by putting in a 5 star performance by thumping Junction 5-0. Girl of the game Amelia Evans had a night to remember, and it was her that gave them a 1-0 lead to take to the break.
Second half the girls really put on a show by adding 4 more goals through Elisa Williams and Amelia Evans grabbing a further 3, to take her tally to 4 for the night. Junction before this game boasted one of the meanest defences in the league, so to blow them away in this manner and seal the league title with such style was pleasing for the whole team, who were now playing with bags of confidence.
The girls will be presented with the league title at their last game of the season at home to Brickfield Rangers, with the date and time to be confirmed.
Now the whole club moved onto finals day at Kinmel Bay, were the Under 14 squad and the Under 12 squad were both competing for more glory.
It was the 14s who would go for honours first, when they took on Pwllheli in the North Wales Girl’s League Cup final.
This game kicked off, and the Corwen Girls came flying out of the traps, and it was only the woodwork that denied the girls from taking the lead twice in the opening minute.
It was to be the theme for most of this cup final, as the Corwen girls set a blistering pace and stamped their authority on the game from this moment on. The Corwen side were passing the ball around with such style it was only a matter of time before the opening goal came.
In the 10th minute it was hot shot striker Alex Gore-Rees who finished off in style from six yards to give the girls a deserved lead.
Number two wasn't far behind, when Heledd Roberts pounced on some sloppy defending to race through on goal and finish with ease to double the lead on 20 minutes.
Wave after wave of Corwen attacks kept Pwllheli on the back foot for the rest of the half, and the girls went into the break with one hand on the cup.
The second half saw the opposition come out fighting, and they had a real go at the Corwen girls, but with the back 3 of Lizzy Hughes, Olivia Egginton and Sephora Evans in such fine form there was to be no way through in the opening exchanges. 10 minutes in and the Corwen girls were soon back in the groove and again wrestled the initiative back, with the whole side stepping up to the plate and pushing Pwllheli back once more and soon the 3rd and decisive goal came.
After some fine build up play it was Heledd Roberts on hand to smash the ball home from 10 yards and put the tie to bed. Despite a late consolation goal the girls now had the game wrapped up and ran out worthy 3-1 winners to clinch the cup, and send the large following of family and friends home happy.
The Under 14 squad will be in cup final action again soon when they take on Prestatyn Girls in the North Wales Coast Cup final, with the time and date tbc.
Now it was back over to the Under 12 squad to try and bag their second title in the space of as many days when they took on Kinmel Bay in the North Wales League Shield Cup final.
The girls started the game as red hot favourites, and it was a tag they would live up to as they thumped their opposition 7-0 in a one sided final.
The girls raced into a first half 4-0 lead, with hot shot striker Katie Armstrong bagging all the goals.
Second half they kept up the tempo and added a further 3 more to the total, Armstrong hitting 1 more to take her tally to 5 for the day. Amelia Evans will claim number 6, as her cross was deflected into the net, and Mali Jones finished things off with a truly wonderful solo run and quality finish to end the day off in style.
This performance was a truly fantastic team effort and every one of the girls played their part to claim a historic league and cup double.
To claim 3 titles in the space of two days, and with the possibility of more to follow is wonderful achievement for the Corwen girls and the whole club and town are extremely proud of them all.
