Season Opener Starts with a Win

CALFC Started their season in the best possible way with a 5-0 victory at home vs. Wigan Athletic Ladies. Both teams started the game with a really high intensity as both teams worked hard in gaining possession of the ball.

The first few opening chances fell the way of Crewe as they looked to capitalise on some combination play between the midfield and forward areas, Jess Smith coming close and also Katy Connell on a few occasions. The half also saw Crewe get some good opportunities to capitalise on some Corner Kicks as Sarah Gill delivered well into the area for the waiting Crewe Players. Neither teams however managed to get the advantage before the break and the score at half time remained 0-0.

The second half however Crewe managed to gain their composure and began playing some good football on the ground combining in the middle and wide areas. The deadline was finally broken however as Katy Connell got the first goal of the game which gave Crewe the confidence to control the game. The second goal of the game came just 45 seconds later as Jess Smith slotted home from inside the box.

As the game continued Crewe showed good signs of match fitness and continued to press across all areas of the field of which Shell Saunders continually worked from box to box to and was later rewarded with 2 goals both coming in close succession, she was unlucky not to get her hat-trick as a long range effort rattled the bar.

The final goal of the game came from substitute Sophie Freeman who replaced the hard working Anne Marie Atherton and within 5 minutes Freeman netted from close range to give the Alex Ladies a 5 -0 home win. The Player of the match award was given to Shell Saunders who was inspirational in her work rate and clinical in front of goal.

Well Done Ladies
