The investment being made by Cumnock RFC into schools in the area has started to show signs of rugby success.
The introduction of a comprehensive rugby programme in the primary and secondary schools, which includes a School of Rugby at Cumnock Academy as well as After School Clubs at Cumnock and Auchinleck, is starting yield not only success in terms of boys & girls playing the game but also in terms of success on the pitch.
On Friday 26th April a combined side from Cumnock and Auchinleck Academy pupils will contest the final of the U16 Ayrshire Schools Cup against a team from Largs Academy.
This is the 1st year that this team has competed in local and national competition with a slowly building confidence that is starting to yield results. Having lost only one game so far this season to a side from Wellington School(Ayr) the team has gelled well and rightly deserved their No.1 seeding going into the Ayrshire Region's premier cup competition for schools.
Research has been conducted to find out when a team from the area last featured in the end of season showpiece however it would appear that this year is a first.
The final will KO at Millbrae @ 1815 on the 26th April with details available from the Ayrshire Schools Rugby News facebook page available at this link . (If you are a regular FB user then please "LIKE" the page and you will be kept up to date with Ayrshire schools rugby in future.)
This is a terrific achievement for the team and as such we are asking as many players, parents & supporters from the Academies and Cumnock Rugby Club to come along to Millbrae on the night to cheer the team on. There will be a small charge on the gate of £1.00 which will go to rugby development in Ayrshire schools. It is likely that hot food, drinks and the usual facilities at Ayr Rugby Club will be available.
Hope to see you there.
