FA cup extra preliminary round

Daventry’s first competitive game of the 2016/17 season took place on Saturday with Town travelling to Wembley FC in the FA Cup extra preliminary round. Within view of the impressive Wembley stadium, Daventry were comprehensively beaten 4-0 to end their cup dream for another year.
With 6 players unavailable it was always going to be a tough ask for Daventry to get a result from a club in step 5. However, their cause was not helped by a poor first half performance, creating only one chance in the first half - a header over the bar from a corner a minute from the break.

Wembley started very brightly; forcing a save from the feet of George McCellan as early as the second minute, when the dangerous Joe Wright was through on goal. Wembley pushed on in the first 10 minutes with both left back Charlie Weir, and winger Calvin Kasirye going close. Wembley’s breakthrough came in fortuitous circumstances. A defensive clearance was hit against striker Joe Wright’s back and looped over the stranded McCellan to make it 1-0. As the half wore on Wembley kept up the pressure and forced 5 corners; and should have doubled their advantage with a free header from Weir, as Daventry struggled to defend set pieces. Wembley very nearly made it 2 on 32 minutes with Wright rounding keeper McCellan but were forced to shoot from a wide angle; and McCellan was able to get back and clear the ball from the line.
Wembley did, however, make it 2 on 38 minutes with Joe Wright adding to his tally with a delicate chip over McCellan. Daventry failed to concentrate from the kick off and it was 3 less than a minutes later with Jabir Lamba pouncing on a defensive slip; and finishing well from the edge of the box.

The Wembley onslaught continued in the second half, and it was 4-0 on 48 minutes, Lamba helping himself to his second with a header from 10 yards. A tactical switch from managers Marks and Parkinson saw Daventry come into the game more and the best chance of the game fell to Adam Creaney who shot wide on 58 minutes when clean through on goal. A minute later Bates and Heavey both went close. The rest of the half was fairly even, Joe Wright did have the chance to seal his hat-trick late on, only to see his shot again blocked by the feet of McCellan

Daventry’s next game is Saturday the 13th away at Potton United in UCL Division 1.
