The Devon U15 rugby squad had their first training weekend of the season and Devonport Services had 4 players representing the county. Corey Price, Will Turner, Andy Pond and Darryl Pinnegar all attended the training weekend which gave the players the opportunity to develop as a squad whilst getting to know each other and included team building sessions, a day of intensive training and presentations on general tactics and the aspiration of the squad over the coming months. They also took time out to watch the England vs France match whilst recovering from a punishing training regime. The weekend ended with two games against Sidmouth U16s and Topsham U16s on Sunday in their first run out together.
In both matches Devon conceded early tries but as they started to gel together as a team they fought their way back into contention to win comfortably. In the first match Andy Pond and Darryl Pinnegar worked hard in the scrum against a bigger and stronger pack. Kier Murphy came on in the second half at scrum half and linked well with Will Turner who was playing in the centre. Cory Price also came on for the second half and had several good runs down the wing eventually getting his reward with a well earned try under the posts. The second match was equally as hard and saw Andy Pond take to the field again for the first half to cover for an injured team mate.
The training is in preparation for a series of matches against other counties over the forthcoming months including games against Somerset and Cornwall and a county festival at Bath. The five players have been involved in a series of gruelling trials resulting in a squad of 44 being selected from over 400 potential players. Other local clubs with players representing Devon in the U15s squad include Ivybridge RFC and Stonehouse Sharks RFC as well as players from local schools.
