Donnycarney FC became the first team to put their name in the FAI Junior Cup sixth round hat after they knocked man Knocklyon out of the competition on Friday night.
The AUL Premier A side achieved the feat despite being reduced to 1o men just late in the first half, indeed the man deficit never really looked like threatening their progression hopes and the moved into the last 32 with relative ease.
The hosts got of to a sensational start and were ahead as early as minute five. Mark Ludlow played in AUL Oscar Traynor man of the moment down the channel and carried on his run. Talbot picked out the advancing midfielder and Ludlow converted in style to finish of a move he started.
Ludlow and Talbot combined 20 minutes later to double the lead. Front man Talbott dropped into midfield collected the ball and clipped a pass over the top for Ludlow the midfielder skipped past a challenge squared the ball across the box which a Knocklyon defender turned into his own net.
‘Lyon were then given an opportunity to roar back when the hosts were reduced to 10 just ten minutes later. Depleted Donnycarney, however continued to boss proceedings after the turn. It wasn’t long before they had a three goal cushion Calvin Madden, whose brother Paddy scored for Scunthorpe in the FA Cup this weekend, hit an FAI Junior Cup goal. The youngster tapping home after a punted clearance caused trouble in the visiting defence.
Madden then provided Talbott with the kind of chance he rarely misses. The wide man found the striker in the area and he sidestepped the keeper and slotted home.
Knocklyon did hit the back of the net late on but their last minute goal was always going to prove consolation at best.
