Old friends...new ground!

Old friends...new ground!

Mishi Morath1 Aug 2017 - 14:12

We are honoured to be the opponents at Aveley tomorrow evening (2nd August) for the first ever game at their new stadium.

Aveley are in the Bostik League division One North & the kick off it at 7.45pm and It's a proverbial stones throw from their old Mill Field home, set beyond it by about 500 yards, past the side opposite the old main stand.

It's a brave new world for them, as they become another of the progressive clubs to embrace the 21st Century with a modern all-weather surface. For me, this is the way forward for many a non-league club to maximize income, and have much more community involvement.

Parkside is about the same to get to as their old home. By car you simply need to type in this post code to your SatNav: RM15 4PX; with the full address being Parkside, Park Lane, Aveley.

Public transport wise I'd suggest the easiest and nearest station is by heading to Rainham, which, departs from Fenchurch Street. You can also join it at West Ham, which is a handy interchange for the Jubilee Line. That connects easily with trains from London Bridge, or the Overground at Canada Water.

From Rainham station go out to the main road, and take a 372 from the bus stop opposite, heading to Aveley, getting off at the same stop at you would have for the old ground, as it turns into Mill Road. The bus stop to get off at is called St. Pauls Close & after the match the buses back to Rainham station are half hourly, timetabled at 21:57 & 22:27 with the last service being at 23:37. The journey should take around ten to fifteen minutes, from memory.

From the bus stop at St. Pauls Close go back to the junction & turn right into the Aveley by-pass; the ground will be on the left, & the walk should take you ten to fifteen minutes, being just over half a mile away.

Coming back by train they are at 22:13 & 22:43; changing at Stratford for the Jubilee line or Docklands Light Railway, to head back to South London; or staying on to the terminus, which is Liverpool Street. The last train is the 23:17, which still connects for the Jubilee Line at Stratford.

If you fancy a drink locally, to be honest, I don't know too much about the local pubs, but there's always The Phoenix, which just outside Rainham station, and if usually frequented by Hamlet fans when we play at Aveley.

The place of Aveley itself it not really much more than a village in size, when you get off the train at Rainham you might want to look at Rainham Hall, but only from the outside, as it will be closed. Turn left out of the station, just past the pub mentioned, and you will see the Church of St. Helen And St. Giles, the oldest building in Rainham, but again, no public access, though the grounds will be open.

If you are a bit of a 'culture vulture' I'd humbly suggest staying around Liverpool Street, if you have a travel card, and do one or all of the following three options:

Go to Mile End, where right by the Mile End Stadium which is home to two sides from the Essex Senior League, namely
Sporting Bengal United and Tower Hamlets, there is the Ragged House Museum. a delight of a building and it's FREE to visit. It is only open in the weeks on Wednesdays & Thursday, so would be perfect to combine with the game at Aveley.

I would suggest combining this with a stop off at Whitechapel, where there is another small free hidden gem of our great city, the Royal London Hospital Museum, where you can find out about Jack the Ripper & the Elephant Man, among other interesting displays.

My final recommendation today is just across the road from Liverpool Street Station, if you're catching a train from there...the Bishopsgate Institute, not just to see whatever small display they have in their corridors, but specifically to venture into their amazing library, which if you haven't discovered it before, is a veritable treasure trove of London history.

After all of that you will be able to be part of some history of your own, by cheering on The Hamlet in the first ever game at Aveley's new stadium!

Whatever you do enjoy your day!

And in case anyone is interested, it's a reasonable price to get into the match, they are charging the following prices tomorrow: Adults £8 OAPs £6 Under 16 £2.
