The 1st Battalion , the Welsh Guards have set up a Charity to raise much needed funds for the WELSH GUARDS AFGHANISTAN APPEAL.
On their last tour, they ‘lost’ 7 men and of 144 injured, 42 suffered horrific life changing injuries. They will be returning to Afghanistan again in the spring of 2012 ands as sure as night follows day,there will be more casualties. Heaven only knows how many more will succumb to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the months and years ahead.

Their objective is to raise money for the families of the dead and to help alleviate the suffering of wounded soldiers. Whilst the Government pays ‘lip service' to them, their contribution is woefully inadequate.

Dunvant R.F.C. will be holding a bucket collection at half time during our home game against Tumble on Saturday 21st January.

Businesses and organizations can claim tax relief against their tax returns as the Appeal is a Registered Charity (Reg.No 1073109)

Any amount will be most gratefully received, however, for a donation of £100 or more, the donor is inducted into the ‘Arm and a Leg’. You donate an arm and a leg, Cockney speak for a lot of money, and they purchase state of the art prosthetic limbs for our boys. This of course is merely symbolic as there are so many other horrific injuries they have to contend with.

Then there is the Welsh Guard’s Medal of Honour. This is a sterling silver medal, made by Mappin & webb, silversmiths to the Colonel and Patron, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. This icon is one of a limited edition of 100. To the front,is the Regimental Crest, the leek, with the words ‘Honour our Soldiers’ embossed. The rear reads ‘Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal’ and as well as a limited edition number, the donor’s name is stamped. The ribbon carries the colours of The Brigade of Guards and looks stunning on formal occasions. This is a civilian award and with it, like the Arm and a Leg lapel pin, comes a Certificate of Appreciation signed by the Adjutant. The medal of Honour is presented to any individual, group or business which collects or donates £1000 or more.
