Jeff Probyn to attend the Chairman's Lunch

Jon Barratt27 Feb 2013 - 13:38

Former Wasps and England prop forward, Jeff Probyn is confirmed to attend this years' Chairman's Lunch on Saturday 13th April

Jeff Probyn is one of East London's rugby success stories; born in Bethnal Green, he went on to play prop forward for Wasps and win 37 Caps with England and scoring 3 tries in his international career.

Jeff was actually considered to be fairly slight for a modern international prop in his day but he was none the less just as effective with built sloped shoulders and a perfectly set, wide stance. At one stage he was voted the best prop in the world and due to his exceptional scrummaging technique some players even took to cutting off the sleeves of their shirts as they believed this was how Jeff managed to get so low down in the scrum by using their sleeves as leverage. However, the sleeve cutting was unnecessary as Jeff continued to keep scrummaging incredibly low!

During his rugby career, Jeff has been honoured with the following accolades:

  • Selected in England's squad for the 1987 Rugby World Cup
  • Toured South Africa with World XV in 1989
  • Won English Courage league with Wasps in 1990
  • Competed in six 5 Nations tournaments from 1988 to 1993
  • England U21 manager from 1994 to 1997

It is with great pleasure to welcome such an esteemed player to East London RFC and we hope Jeff has a fantastic day with us.
