After attracting the attention of numerous clubs the Blues have allowed striker Reece Thompson to train with York City for the rest of the week.

Managed by former Blues’ player Russ Wilcox, York are one of a number of clubs who have watched Thompson towards the end of last season and in Wednesday’s friendly against Doncaster Rovers.

The club have agreed that, starting today, Thompson will train with York this week and that he is also able to feature in their pre-season friendly against Leeds United tomorrow evening but will return to Frickley for the weekend’s friendly against Hull City XI and the subsequent pre-season games.

Twenty-one year old Thompson joined the club in mid-October last year from Retford United and impressed as he scored 16 goals in 32 appearances, including 2 in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup Final in May.

Frickley Chairman Gareth Dando said,” Reece has come on leaps and bounds over the last 6 months and has become an important member of the side which is one reason why we agreed a contract for the next 2 seasons. We’ve had interest from a number of clubs in the Championship and League 1 but any deal has to be right for Reece’s long term future and for the Club. We obviously know Russ Wilcox well and have agreed that Reece will train with York this week but he’ll be back with us for our games against Hull City, Leeds United and Barnsley.”

Dando added, “He’s got great ability and in our view is certainly as good if not better than other players who’ve recently made the jump from the Evo-Stik Premier to League football”.
