Langholm Legion 2 Pencaitland 4

Martin Thomlinson25 Feb 2013 - 21:10

First round KO in Waddell Cup

Legion entertained Pencaitland for the third time this season with the visitors coming out on top again after a tough battle on a very bumpy Castleholm pitch.

With several players unavailable, the twelve who did turn out can be proud of their efforts against the league champions and undoubtedly one of the strongest sides in the top division.

The away side started the brighter and had a number of near misses before Cunningham headed home from six yards after a fine cross from the right touchline on eleven minutes.

Pencaitland continued the siege on Legion's goal and it came as no surprise when they doubled their lead on thirty six minutes when Murray out jumped Johnson to head into the empty net.

Legion came out fighting and were thrown a lifeline two minutes later when Haldane's inswinging free kick from the left deceived everyone and found its way to Thomlinson at the back post who chested the ball past his marker before poking the ball home.

This filled the home side with a sense of belief and three minutes later they were level after a lung bursting run down the right wing by Little who found Mattinson in the box. His shot was blocked with the ball falling to Little who fired high into the roof of the net.

Stung by this, Pencaitland then went straight up the park and took the lead when Murray showed great technique to shoot from the edge of the box after a fine display of keepy uppy.

This brought the scoring to an end after a pulsating first half with both sides well and truly in with a shout of progressing to the next round.

Unfortunately it was the away side who grabbed the all important first goal of the second half when Woods tapped home from a yard after a free kick on seventy one minutes.

Tiredness then crept in but the home side battled to the end and can take a lot of positives from knowing they gave a good account of themselves.

League duty resumes this weekend when Tweeddale Rovers will be the visitors and hopefully the players who were unavailable will make themselves available for selection.

With the club now bottom of the league it is vital that everyone pulls together and does their utmost to ensure top division survival.

With seven of the remaining nine league matches at home, Legion's destiny is still very much in their own hands.
