DETERMINED WHITES MAKE IT FIVE ON THE BOUNCE

Let me ask you a question. Would you like to face a team that has now won its last five games in a row?

Would you like to contain the searing pace of Andy Hutchinson or outfox the control and guile of Scott Ruthven?

Add to that the jinking runs of Kallum Smith?

I wouldn't. I'm glad I have hung up my Puma Kings.

And if you manage to contend with that particular trio, you then have to combat a midfield that fights for every ball and then sprays it around at will.

Ok so you then somehow break the ranks of Messrs Toyne, Brooks and Nichol. Congratulations.

All that's left now is the meanest back four in the league. Jacklin never misses a header. Ward covers everything. Wright is the best right back in the league and his full back partner on the left, Jason Field will not let you past.

Anyone else? Oh yes, Robert Peet will move heaven and earth to keep a clean sheet.

Just as you thought it was safe to go back on to the field, a bench of Brown, Cann, Asplin and Everington will come on and maintain the momentum of the side.

That's what Romulus had to contend with on a 3G pitch which I hope Greg Dyke does not make the grass roots of football!.

And so to the game.

An inswinging Brooks corner was dropped by the Romulus keeper and the quick-silver that is striker Hutchinson fired home to give the Whites a deserved 1-0 lead just before the break.

In the 52nd minute, Kallum Smith ghosted in behind the home defence to slot home a pinpoint Ruthven cross.

On the hour, Romulus pulled one back after a wicked deflection gave Robert Peet no chance.

Chances were created by a Whites team that always looked in control and comfortable on the ball.

There was no panic and the substitutes who came on carried the game forward to give Dave Frecklington's side a fifth successive win, four of which have been away from home.

Let me ask you another question. How can a team that loses six of its first seven league matches go on to achieve five victories on the trot?

I can hazard a guess at the answer.

The squad that the Manager has put together will run themselves into the ground for the sake of the team.

There are no stars.

Their success is based on hard work and a willingness to do their best.

Yes, there is skill, passing football and guile.

But the main thing that binds this club together is spirit and the desire and honour of wearing a shirt that has Lincoln United emblazoned on it.

Each player has the Whites badge embedded in his heart.

Come down to the Sun-hat Villas stadium on Tuesday evening to see if the Whites can make it six from six.

Many thanks to Romulus for your hospitality and warmth. We appreciate that.

Thank you to your team for playing the game in the right spirit.
