2013: Another successful year for Llanfair United

2013: Another successful year for Llanfair United

Jonathan Richards2 Jan 2014 - 01:28

As we move into 2014, we have a look back at what was another brilliant year at the club.

The Central Wales cup, which began in January, provided Llanfair with more than one opportunity to test themselves against higher opposition. After knocking out fellow league side Knighton, Llanfair were drawn at home against Caersws. In a dramatic encounter, watched by a large crowd, Llanfair upset the odds and beat the Cymru Alliance side 3-2 before taking on Rhayader, who also play in the Cymru Alliance in the next round. Unfortunately though, the cup run ended there with a spirited 3-1 loss.

In March, after the Rhayader game, the club held a darts night with former Welsh World Champion Mark Webster which turned out to be a very successful and enjoyable night.

In April, the newly built Ivor Owen stand received the Groundtastic magazine award for 'The Best New Non-League Stand'. Builder Aled Haynes and Designer Mark Bowen are pictured below receiving the award.

In May, after losing only one game all season, the First Team were crowned Spar Mid Wales Division 2 Champions. It was an excellent achievement by the club who had not previously won a league title for 23 years!

Llanfair also went on to win a dramatic Division 2 Cup final against Machynlleth at Llanidloes. The game went into extra time after an evenly fought 90 mins which ended 2-2. However in extra time, Llanfair were too strong for Machynlleth and 2 more goals helped retain the cup for the town.

The season also ended well for the Reserves in their first year in Division 1. After losing in late rounds of league cup and town cup, they finished a very respectable 3rd. The ladies also did very well in their first season, finishing 3rd also and losing in their league cup semi final.

In June, the club held a presentation evening at the institute which once again was a very enjoyable night. The winners of the awards were as follows: Tracey Godsell (Ladies Players' Player), Louise Wilde (Ladies Club-man Award), Nora Davies (Ladies Manager's Player), Rhys Stephens (Reserves Manager's and Players' Player), Paul Griffiths (First Team Manager's Player), Steve Andrew (First Team Players' Player), Daryl Griffiths (Clubman Award), Jonathan Richards (Ivor Owen Award for Commitment) & Hywel Bennett (Youth Team Player of the Year).

In July, Rhys 'Suave' Stephens won Manager of the Year for Spar 2 whilst Chris Gethin picked up the top goalscorer award. Also in July, the new ground improvements which included re-turfing, new dugouts and new railings were completed.

In August, the club held another successful Berys Waldron Football and Family fun day. The day once again raised a great deal of money for Cancer Research as the club continues to support charities as well as developing for the future.

So far this season all teams are doing brilliantly. At the end of 2013, the Reserves sit at the top of the league having played half their games and hope to hold onto to top spot until close of play in May. The youths have also began the season promisingly.

The Ladies also sit pretty at the top having beaten league rivals Newtown to take a 6 point lead into 2014. The Ladies are also still in the Welsh Cup having knocked out Welsh Premier side Northop Hall 4-2 in the last 16 and they now face Caernarfon in the Quarter Finals in February. A fantastic effort by the girls!

The year ended with two derby wins over Dyffryn Banw to leave Llanfair second at the close of the year behind so far 100% Llandrindod Well who Llanfair face next. The First team, like the Ladies have also had an incredible Welsh Cup run. After knocking out Kerry, Builth Wells and FC Gwalchmai, Llanfair beat local Cymru Alliance rivals Guilsfield 2-1 in an epic day on the Mount. A fantastic result which earned a tie which could possibly be the club's biggest fixture against Aberystwyth Town at home. In front of 333 people, Llanfair put up a brave fight against the Welsh Premier side, taking the lead early on but eventually losing 4-2.

So another fantastic year for the club and let's hope that 2014 proves to be just as successful, if not even better!

Best wishes and a Happy New Year to all our players, committee, supporters and opponents.
