When it comes to amateur Men's Rugby League in London there has only been one team in everyone's mind these last three seasons and that has been the South West London Chargers.
After starting from humble beginnings in January 2013, Chargers have proved the team to beat when it has come to the London Men's Competitions. Having won 3 consecutive London Premier titles and following it up with 3 consecutive Harry Jepson titles - the only team to win either title 3 times (let alone three times in a row) - the players and committee of the club thought it was time to think big and test ourselves outside of the London market.
Having competed in the last 2 Challenge Cup's (making the 2nd round in 2014) and holding our own against teams from a more "traditional" rugby league heartland, the seed has been sown in the clubs mind "How would we compare to Rugby League teams outside of London on a weekly basis". With this goal in mind the first decision has been made to drop the "South West" from our name and will be London Chargers RL from now on.
The decision to change the name has not been taken lightly, the South West originally represented the two separate groups of players/officials from South London Storm & West London Sharks who came together to form the new club in 2013 so to remove it could be seen as a step away from the past. Instead it is the opposite. The Club feels that to appeal to a wider audience (especially in the traditional heartlands) we have to be bolder with our name and branding.
In line with the name change the club has a new website www.LondonChargersRL.com facebook and twitter will be changed accordingly and we have launched 3 new email addresses:
Coach: coach@londonchargersrl.com
Admin: admin@londonchargersrl.com
Chairman: chairman@londonchargersrl.com
The Clubs goal is to be the premier amateur Rugby League Club in London and with the announcements that will follow later today you can see that we have started on that road already.
