Up Close & Personal with Peter Cumiskey by Gary Langley

Dave Rannard18 Sep 2010 - 06:08

In our series of interviews with prominent people in and around the club in today’s issue we speak to Mariner’s legend Peter Cumiskey!

Peter is a man who doesn’t mix his words and true to form this interview gives us a fascinating insight. We started off by asking Peter how the coaching role was going and how it was developing?
“It’s been enjoyable so far, a lot more work involved but the overall experience is great and I’m enjoying it.”

For you has the Coaching role been a natural progression as some would argue that you still have plenty of playing days left?
“To be honest id always been interested in the coaching and development side of the game and have learned a lot of things over the years. It’s been great to come in at a time where a lot of changes have been made and get involved in the training and coaching drills, also with an additional detail of coaching the forwards. Obviously I can still do a job on the pitch and if Lynchy wants me to go on for 20 minutes towards the end of the game or play a cameo role then im very much available for selection still.”

Looking at the side do you think that there is the potential there to achieve something this season? At a club like ours where should we be aiming to go?
“Minimum, the play-offs. If we can stay in the leading pack or at least on the coat-tails of the leading pack then this side has the potential to go as far as it wants to and that includes really making an impact this season and forging a way into the business end of the Division come the end of the season. The loss of Neil Harvey for a while so early on is a big one but we are capable of beating anyone in this Division.”

What have you made of our start of the season up to now and what area’s if any have caught your eye for needing attention?
“It’s been ok but there have been opportunities missed, in more ways than one and we need to start performing better here at home. We have made some notes, assessed every game and player on it’s merits and we’re working on things. Just a case of tidying up a bit and putting the chances away really.”

Any particular players that have stood out for you so far this season?
“Stand-outs so far, Jamie Rainford, Stephen Johnson, Jonno (Jonathan Goulding) and John Shaw have all made good impressions early on, the hard part though is maintaining that.”

From what you have seen what has changed on the park since the new gaffer arrived?
“There has been a total re-vamp, it was something that has had to been done. There is more of a buzz about the place and changes made for the better. The players are now going about with a smile on their faces and a greater level of Comerarderie. We’re looking at new systems on the pitch and generally there is more of a team spirit about the place and everyone is happy and pulling in the same direction again which is refreshing to see.”

There seem to be a fair few goals in this team? Is it a case of sprinting out of the traps and winning the games early doors or is it a more measured approach?
“A win is a win, a team like ours now does have a lot of goals for them but we need to learn to be patient, a winning goal in the last ten minutes is just as good as scoring one that wins a game in the first ten. Likewise we also need to avoid conceding later on as well as making sure we don’t waste any chances ourselves.”

Which teams do you think will be in the mix come the end of the season then Peter?
“Well hopefully us, but if we finish above FC United this season then we would have had a good one. FCUM were a solid side, quite established as a team Unit and will be hard for anyone to beat. With the likes of Halifax having had a good start as well but there will be a few teams fancying their chances, ourselves included.”
