Club History
Narberth Rugby Club was established in 2007 after several students from Lower Merion HS and Harriton HS approached Narberth Mayor Tom Grady about starting a rugby club. Mayor Grady developed a program for High School-aged boys (U19), recruited a coaching staff and the club was born. Mayor Grady contacted the Narberth Rugby Club in Narberth, Wales and gained permission to create a brother club in the US. The crest that we wear is similar to that of Narberth RFC in Wales, though we have adapted it to include our "bumble bee" blue & black stripes from the playing uniform.
The new Narberth Rugby Club played its first season in Division III in the Eastern PA Rugby Union. After a successful start - going 6-1, the team was promoted to Division I.
Over the last 5 years, the program has grown. In 2011, a summer camp flag rugby team was established for U11, to introduce them to the game and in 2012, the club established an U15 team and played matches in New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania and against a visiting side from New York. Presently the club has 50 players ranging in age from 9-18 years. 2013 brings a change with the establishment of Rugby Pennsylvania, our new governing body with a strict focus on formalizing youth rugby in Pennsylvania.
One great rugby tradition is the annual tour, and the new Narberth Rugby Club had its first taste of the challenge, the fun and the team camaraderie of a tour when it set out to 'conquer' the Cayman Islands in 2010. Closer to home, in 2013, teams will travel to the Maryland Exiles tournament in April and is busy planning a longer tour in 2014.
