Bro Ffestiniog celebrate WRU full-member status

Gary Williams27 Jun 2011 - 21:51

At their recent AGM, Bro Ffestiniog reflected on a successful season that saw them gain WRU status, reach the cup final and finish 6th in the league

AFTER many years of hard work Bro Ffestiniog RFC have been awarded full membership of the Welsh Rugby Union.

The decision, announced by chairman Pennant Williams at the club’s AGM, has been applauded by many as the facilities at Dolawel are among the best in the North Wales region.

The meeting was presided over by club president Tony Coleman who thanked everyone who had worked so hard over the past year.

Head coach Alan Shields praised the club’s commitment during the bad weather and praised fixture secretary Meirion Jones, groundsman Gwynne Williams and stewardess Liz Jones for their work.

Bro enjoyed a successful 2010/11 season having finished sixth in WRU Division One North and reaching the North Wales Cup final.

There had been notable performances, including beating Colwyn Bay, Llangefni and Llandudno both home and away and Bro were only one of the two sides that defeated the champions Caernarfon, that being in the semi-final of the North Wales Cup.

The players were praised for their efforts which ended with them being runners-up in the Llangoed Sevens.

Assistant coach Neil Ellis reported the second XV had ended their campaign very strongly after an indifferent start and urged his squad to turn up for the first pre-season training session on July 5.

Meinir Jones, on behalf of the club’s junior section, reported that it had been a successful season for all ages and added the need for more coaches and parents to volunteer next term.

Team manager Tony Crampton encouragingly added there were names already put forward for the coaching courses.

With treasurer Gwynne Williams unavailable, Pennant Williams reported on his behalf, stating that the club had made a small loss over the season but had managed a notable saving of £3,000 on its energy bills thanks to the assistance of the Green Town project and added that the brewery loan has now been paid off in full.

Bro Ffestiniog Cyf chairman Glyn Crampton reported bar takings were up and had made a significant profit, thanked stewardess Liz Jones for her hard work and ended by revealing the club were in talks with two breweries with the intention of changing supplier.

Membership secretary Keith Roberts reported the total of members was slightly up on last year having reached around 440.

Pennant Williams was duly re-elected chairman and other officials elected were: president – Tony Coleman; secretary – TBA; treasurer/groundsman – Gwynne Williams; fixture sec – Meirion Jones; membership sec – Keith Roberts; team manager – Tony Crampton; committee – Robert Williams, Ken Roberts, Alan Lay and Adrian Jones
