13-man OMT's suffer heavy away loss at Finchley

OMT's travelled to Finchley RFC facing an uphill challenge of 13-men against 15 and 3 replacements.

We welcomed back Marcus-Alexander Neil and Govind Kandola for their first appearances for the club in over 18 months, alongside 11 team-mates who have featured regularly at training and versus Harrow RFC in Round Two.

OMT's started well and played to our strengths while knowing that any turnover ball or errors would probably result in Finchley being able to utilise the space that their two-man advantage created. Despite conceding well-worked Finchley tries, OMT were able to pose a respectable threat to Finchley and scored a superb try through Joe Little after a lineout driving maul.

At half-time, and with the game already out of reach it was decided to continue to play positive rugby and to try to gain pressure to cross the Finchley line. Another superb lineout driving maul was collapsed on the tryline and gave the match official no other choice than to award OMT a penalty try.

The last quarter of the game saw John Richardson receive a yellow card for a technical offence and a 12-man OMT conceded try after try due to the impossible nature of trying to cover both space and a 3-man advantage.

At the final whistle it was evident that while the home crowd and officials enjoyed their 17-try spectacle, the OMT team had produced a spirited performance but could not maintain the defensive effort needed against 15-men and their replacements. Captain Tom Kenison thanked his 12 team-mates and accepted that while the challenge may have seemed impossible, the two tries and dominance in the scrum were positives to take forward in to the coming games.

We would like to thank our friends at Finchley RFC for their warm welcome, David Gallagher (London Society match official) for refereeing with empathy, Andy Connor for running touch and our supporters and officials for their continued support and understanding.
