Back In The Day: Cup Matches v Services

Richard Belli24 Jan 2014 - 01:43

With the Chiefs once again paired with Devonport Services in the Lockie Cup we take a look back at some memorable cup encounters over the years.

As last season's close encounter in the Lockie Cup showed they are usually tight matches between the sides. We've picked out three more cup matches, all of which were played at The Rectory, from the archives to illustrate the point.

Argaum 3 Services A 0 : The Lockie Cup Final - 1923-24
To date the only occasion that the club has won the Lockie Cup. Of the earlier rounds, only one report is available, against Bere Alston at Plympton, who were defeated 31-0, the backs playing remarkably well with Heard outstanding. Tries by Heard, Cummings, Ward and Keen - two apiece - and a further try by Pearce who also kicked two conversions. The final was against Devonport Services A at the Rectory, Argaum scraping home by a try to nil. They owed their victory "to the smartness of their forwards, although it was Chirgwin the half back who scored. The ground was very heavy and handling could not be indulged in. Both sides made frequent attempts to give a display of this phase, but a forwards game suited the conditions better. Argaum possessed a fast set of forwards and a fairly skilful back division. They had the better of the game and deserved victory".

Services II 15 Argaum 6 : The RNEC Cup Final - 2000-2001
A 13-11 victory over Prince Rock Woodland Fort in the semi-final at Elburton saw Argaum through to their first final in a decade. After such a disrupted season (due to foot and mouth) and a generally poor showing in the league the Chiefs held up the honour of Devon Two by producing a performance full of pride, commitment and no little skill. Against a very experienced Services side Argaum soaked up a lot of first-half pressure with the sort of defending which has been a hallmark of the season. Trailing by a single penalty goal at the interval, they took the game to Services in the second period and the pressure applied resulted in penalty goals for Darren Wills and Dominic Hill. Going in to the final quarter 6-3 up Argaum had one hand on the cup. It wasn't until the last quarter, when Services' Fijian substitute Serau was introduced, that the balance of the game tipped in the home side's favour and they ran in 2 late tries to kill off Argaum's Cup hopes for another year.

Services 9 Argaum 0 : The Devon Cup Quarter Final - 1969-70
The two teams met in the Devon Cup in March 1970 although on this occasion Argaum faced the full strength Devonport Services side including 8 navy 'Caps'. Argaum themselves were having a pretty decent season making light work of Brixham (21-12) at Roborough in the previous round. Argaum's pack played well, especially in the loose and skipper Ray Plummer controlled things well from the base of the scrum. However Services took advantage of the limited number of chances that came their way to progress to the semi-final.
