DOUBLE CUP ANNIVERSARY IN SKELMERSDALE

By Neil Leatherbarrow

Saturday 30th July 2016 is a national day to remember for the nation’s football supporters. It will also be a day to bring back the memories for any football follower aged from their mid-fifties onward who lives or did in West Lancashire in the 1960’s. Nationally it is the day in 1966 when a certain Geoffrey Hurst hit a hat-trick at Wembley to send the country into a mass celebration when England picked up the World Cup. It is a sure thing that the fiftieth anniversary of that great day will be well represented in the English media.
It by sheer coincidence it is also the day Skelmersdale United have chosen to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their great Wembley occasion. Skelmersdale’s Wembley meeting with Enfield in the 1967 FA Amateur Cup Final was actually played on Saturday 22nd May 1967 with a replay at Manchester City’s Maine Road on Saturday 29th April and stories abound about how ‘the whole town’ went down to London for the day.
The Champion will be telling that story later in the month, but Skelmersdale United are expecting a big attendance on the day, as many from the town will again come out to celebrate the occasion and revive the memories.
The game itself is being relived as Enfield Town make the trip up from North London, Skelmersdale will make the return trip during the 2017/18 pre-season and many of the Skelmersdale players who walked out at Wembley will be at Stormy Corner on the day.
Skelmersdale United are offering local businesses the opportunity to get on board and meet the heroes of 1967, by offering a multitude of sponsorship’s, whether it be the a hospitality package or just a programme add so that your company name can go down in history for the next fifty years.
It should be a great day for Skelmersdale and you can see how you can take part by phoning 01695 575958.
