The Saints play their much awaited Cornwall Cup semi-final against St Ives this coming Easter Saturday. This game has been postponed due to the weather and Saints involvement National Cup rugby, both of which made it very tricky to find a free date. Many thanks to our Fixture Secretary, Nicola Straight, her St Ives counterpart and the CRFU all of whom have been working away to find the most convenient date.
Firstly I must congratulate St Ives on being crowned champions of Western Counties West. With 3 games remaining they now hold an unassailable 16 point lead over the Saints. I was surprised to read that this was St Ives first league championship but I would like to offer our sincere congratulations to Paul Thrilby, his players, the coaching staff and all associated with St Ives RFC, it is thoroughly deserved and we wish them success in the higher league next season. I always love to see Cornish sides do well.
This semi-final is a very good matchup as first and second in the league go head-to-head in a fascinating game. In the league Saints won at home earlier in the season while St Ives turned us over on their patch so, with honours even, both sides know each other well and it looks like the team that performs on the day will progress to the final.
It is fair to say that the Hakes have been more consistent in recent form and will be very confident going into Saturday. The Saints will be looking at a few recent games where they have played well but just lacked that finishing edge and working hard to turn that around.
The Cup holds a special place in the hearts of many Saints, we have worked hard over many seasons to register our first win last year and we are determined to defend our trophy.
One thing is for sure, Cup games bring their own special dynamic and atmosphere and with two sides who have enjoyed fantastic seasons, there will be a real desire to get to that Cup Final and lay hands on that silverware.
It all makes for a tantalising Easter Saturday match-up so why not come to Tregorrick and make some noise to cheer the lads on….COYS !!!!
