HALE PREP WIN NATIONAL POP

TLC Admin10 Jul 2015 - 08:05

Third successive title

Hale Prep made Lacrosse history when they secured a record breaking third successive National Pop Lacrosse title at the University of Hertford on 15th June.

For the triumphant Hale team it was a hard won triumph following on from the school’s victories in 2013 and 2014. The school also won the title in 2009.

The school is a partner school with Timperley Lacrosse Club and had to come through a tough qualifying route winning the Timperley tournament, the Trafford tournament and then the North West Tournament, seeing off some top class teams.

In the National finals they faced Scottish champions Killearn in the qualifying rounds and enjoyed a comfortable 11-2 victory. In the semi finals Hale faced another NW school in Wilmslow's Gorsey Bank. It was tough match with Hale quickly going 1-4 down before they showed real fighting spirit to storm back to win 8-7.

The Final was against another NW school in Tithebarn from Heaton Mersey who had been Hale's toughest opponents in the North west Finals and to come up against them again in the Nationals was not really a surprise. The game was a real nail biter and at full time the scores were level at an incredible 10-10. After the extra two minutes the teams were still level at 11-11and the game went into the dreaded "golden goal".

Hale won the first centre possession and a pass from Oliver Hill found Finley Cross who rode an aggressive challenge to stick the ball in the net. To the anguish of the Hale fans the goal was controversially disallowed and Tithebarn gained possession to race up field only to see a powerful shot ricochet off the cross bar to Oliver Hill who again found Finlay Cross who made no mistake this time and he rifled home the winning goal- a fantastic end to a fantastic game.

The win made it three in a row for Hale to go alongside their win back in 2009. For winning coach Jo Baker it was an incredible 6th National title to go along with wins she had with Bowdon Church School in 1999 and 2001.
