Club History

Founded in 1970 and known as Nautical Football Club, the club started to play in the Barrow North Western League that same year and home fixtures were played on the council owned Biggar Bank pitches. Nautical continued to play in the Barrow North Western League for 13 years until 1983 when they left to join the Furness Premier League which had been formed a couple of years previous and almost capped off a memorable end with a league treble but unfortunately finished runners up after having previously won the title in 1980-81 and 1982-83.

In 1983 after playing on the Biggar Bank pitches since the club was founded Nautical managed to obtain a lease from Cumbria County Council to use Tumerhill as our home ground, with the changing facilities being included in the lease the club could now apply to play in the Furness Premier league for the 1983-84 season as this was a requirement by the league that all member clubs had to have their own pitch and changing facilities, something we had never had before. Our application was approved. In 1984 the FPL introduced another division for teams in the area to play in which our reserve team joined.

Success didn't take long and Nautical FC were a force to be reckoned with as the first and reserve teams both won numerous league titles and cup competitions throughout the 1980's and 1990's. It was during this successful period that in 1995 the club had the opportunity to lease the full area of Tummerhill which would allow our Junior section the ability to play their home fixtures on Walney instead of being allocated pitches to play on by the local Junior league. This was a great step forward for the club as we were all finally based at Tummerhill.

It was in 2001 that the club decided it needed to move in a different direction. Therefore it was agreed that with the increasing number of junior and senior players who lived on Walney Island that the right thing to do was to change the name of the club to Walney Island F.C. Which we have been known as for the last 12 years.

Since the name change Walney has gone from strength to strength and we have had some good teams throughout the years playing locally but unfortunately a lot of players left to join other local teams who played in higher standard leagues. Therefore in 2007 after almost 25 years affiliated to Furness Premier League, the first team were promoted to the West Lancashire Football League Division 2.

The 'A' team was setup around 1989 this was to keep with the development and also to introduce the lads who had just finished junior football to open age football. They currently play in the FPL Division 2.

We currently boast a strong Junior setup and believe it is one the best in the area, at the moment we have 10 junior teams from u7-u16 who play Mini,9v9 and 11-A-Side football. All our Coaches are qualified to at least FA Level 1 are all Enhanced CRB checked and have attended an FA Safeguarding Children Workshop and an Emergency First Aid Workshop.
