Covid-19 update

Cricket in Watton-at-Stone – Important Update
We hope you are all keeping well and coping with the restrictions on our way of life during the current Covid-19 pandemic.
Cricket has clearly taken a back seat and, other than reminiscences triggered by videos and replayed match commentary, we have had to live without our favourite summer sport. There has not been any recreational cricket at all so far this year but there may yet be 'cricket at the end of the tunnel'.
The ECB has said that there will be no professional cricket until 1st July at the earliest and the Hertfordshire Cricket League (SHCL) says '.. we have decided that there will be no cricket until at least 11th July giving us no more than half a season'.
The 11th July, however, is less than two months away.
In the meantime, the recent government announcements mean that we are allowed to get out and play some cricket. As the BBC put it '.. one-on-one sport with someone from outside your household, such as tennis or cricket nets, will be allowed provided participants adhere to social distancing rules'.
Watton-at-Stone Nets are Open
Watton-at-Stone Cricket Club have invested in two new cricket nets at the top of The Meadow in the heart of Watton and they are available for your use. All members of the club and the community of Watton-at-Stone are invited to get out there and 'have a net'.
We won't be able to keep our store shed open to provide equipment but, provided you have a bat, a ball and perhaps some leg guards, a box and a helmet, you can use a bag for stumps and enjoy a net. Please bear in mind the following conditions:

  • If you are not all from a single household, just two people may participate at any time.
  • Social distancing must be obeyed – stay at least two metres apart.
  • Take care over sharing equipment – the virus can be passed on a bat handle or a cricket ball.
  • Flat soled shoes only in the nets – no spikes or studs.
  • Avoid touching your face and, when you get home, wash your hands thoroughly.

If usage builds up too much, we may have to introduce a booking system but, for now, go for it!
