The FA Cup Final will be the biggest game this weekend...

... with most of the nation watching bits of the Arsenal v. Hull City game whilst eating their evening meal.

It was a bit different on this day thirty seven years ago when Workington played what would be their final game in the Football League.

The last four seasons in the old Fourth Division had become very difficult and finishes of 23rd, 23rd, 24th and 24th suggested we were living on borrowed time. And so it proved.

We had played Newport County in the final home game three days earlier, but the return at Somerton Park (pictured) was a rearranged fixture having been postponed on two previous occasions.

A first half goal from County’s Woods secured two vital points for the hosts, before an 8,313 attendance which included just a handful of Workington supporters.

Our fate had already been decided before the double-header against County but 1-0 victories in both games ensured the Welsh outfit’s survival. They climbed out of the bottom four at our expense whilst Halifax Town, Hartlepool and Southport accompanied Reds in applying for re-election.

Reds’ line-up in that final game (17 May, 1977) was: John Laisby, Mick Leng, Kenny Wallace, John Honour, Ian Johnston, Martin Scholes, Martin Harris, Chris Kisby, Phil Ashworth, Neil McDonald, Colin Williamson. Substitute – Mick Higgins
