On a crisp Wednesday night under the lights, Ellistown overcome a battling and skillful Mountsorrel side to move into the last eight of the league cup and dreaming of a Wembley final.

1st half, town under estimated Mountsorrel who should have had the game wrapped up in the first 30 mins as they played with an Ellistown side who could not work how a mid-table 1st division side could play so well.

Mountsorrel scored early when Anderson Tomas waltzed round our cup keeper Austin Parish on 5 mins.

EFC 0-1 MA 5 mins

Just a blip we thought, how wrong we were as Mountsorrel attacked at will and only, they will know why they were not 4-0 up before Josh Thompson equalised on 20 mins.

EFC 1-1 MA 20 mins

Normal service resumed; how wrong we were as Mountsorrel re-took the lead on 30 mins when Oliver Rowley coolly finished.

A frustrated Town then lost their cool as tackles started to fly in from both sides that give ref Simon Fradley plenty of opportunity to give out his xmas cards to players. Credit to Simon and his officials, Dean Simms and Michael Cornes who managed to keep 22 players on the pitch and keep the game flowing.

Town thought they had gone 3-1 down and potentially out of the cup as the Mountsorrel attacker dinked the ball over our keeper. The crowd watched the ball trickle to the net and then stared in amazement as the shout went up, "It's a bird, It's a plan, it's Chris Sykes" as Chris put on the after burners to chase after the ball and managed to claw it off the line with a desperate sliding challenge.

The half-time whistle went with Ellistown clearly frustrated with what had gone on and looking for someone to take it out on.

EFC 1-2 MA HT

Half-time team talk was about calming down, not losing our heads and return to playing football. It worked as we started the 2nd half with a better attitude. Our cause was helped with a Mountsorrel Red card that left them with 10 men.

With the extra man advantage we created enough chances to win but could not take them, while Mountsorrel were dangerous on the break.

Our man of the match, 17 year old Pat Nevin was the best player on the pitch and our most dangerous player with his jinking runs.

We finally equalised on 76 mins when Josh Thompson poked home from inside the box.

The winner came 4 minutes later when super sub Matthew Hart burst the net. You sensed the pressure lifting.

EFC 3-2 MA 80 mins

With nothing to lose Mountsorrel charged forward and Ellistown were content to soak up the pressure and take the win.

Summary

Town knew luck was on their side and we will take that. We had to work hard against a quality Mountsorrel team who are a premier league side in waiting.

We proved tonight we are a battling side and will need to take that attitude into Saturday's game away against title chasing Magna 73.
