Although the first half was goalless it was Newbury who had all the chances and should have been leading had it not been for an uneven playing surface and some not so calm shooting denying them, plus one good home team save from a Charlie Drury shot.
Newbury quickly made amends once the second half started with Iain Middleton’s pace and movement causing the Mytchett defence all sorts of problems, opening the scoring within minutes of the restart when latching onto a Jacob Ransom assist. His second came 5 minutes later and with Newbury dominating possession it was quite a surprise it look to beyond the ¾ mark before Newbury and Middleton scored a third, showing that Middleton’s play is not just about his pace and power, this time he scored from a Steven Passey corner heading adroitly into the corner back the way the ball had come. As with his first brace Middleton scored again quickly to make it 4 for him and 4 for Newbury. There were further chances that went begging, but a solid team performance was rewarded with a clean sheet and with the players looking forward to finishing their fixtures on a high home to Fleet.
