After a decade of Youth football playing through the age groups, firstly in the Peter Houseman and then in North East Hampshire Youth Leagues as either Thatcham Tornados, Greenham Royals and finally as Newbury Youth, encountering on the way both successes and disappointments on and off the field the team came to their final game, fittingly it being a re-arranged one on a Wednesday evening due to a mixture of bad weather and poor fixture management throughout the season.

In a very evenly contested match which either team could have won, but with Newbury always playing catch-up on the scoreboard, it was Fleet who scored first after Newbury had spurned a couple of good chances and been denied by the away keeper. Fleet added a second from a corner which was turned in at the near post by Newbury’s Steven Passey. Passey made up for this by assisting two Newbury goals, both from his corners with the first put in by Jacob Ransom and the second being a Fleet own goal. These goals were interspersed by one from Fleet. Just before the half ended Newbury equalised when Eddie Haines put through Iain Middleton who beat the offside claim to score.

With both teams looking less than happy defending corners and Fleet looking suspect to pace through the middle it was a surprise that there was only one goal in the second half scored which went to Fleet and although they came close Newbury just could not get the goal to equalise to bring the curtain down on the teams footballing journey.
