The ladies of Abergavenny Bowls Club continued their successful start to the season, extending their unbeaten run to six games when visiting Panteg House for a league game last week. With two evenly matched teams, each winning on one rink, Abergavenny tied the game 34 shots all.
Lesley Radley’s rink led by twelve shots after seven ends. Despite a fightback by their opponents, they managed to secured victory by scoring three shots on the final two ends to win by 19 shots to 6. The rink of Clare Morgan was involved in a very close game but their opponents managed to forge ahead over the final four ends, winning by 18 shots to 15.
The Abergavenny Mixed team travelled to Beaufort for a league fixture. They won on one rink but lost on the other two to suffer a narrow defeat by 52 shots to 50. The victorious rink for Abergavenny was that of Mike Collins who established an early ten shot lead that enabled them to secure a victory by 20 shots to 12. Matthew Vale’s rink conceded nine shots on the final five ends, leading to defeat by 18 shots to 13. Martin Doughty’s rink scored eight shots over the final five ends but still suffered a defeat by 22 shots to 18.
Both men’s teams had games to forget as they both lost on all rinks to suffer heavy defeats. The MBA team played at Newbridge, where they lost by 107 shots to 60. Rink scores were John Vale 19 – 28, Gethin Hill 12 – 24, Robert Poynter 14 – 26 and Matthew Vale 15 – 29.
The GBL team welcomed Crosskeys to Avenue Road, where the visitors were successful by 79 shots to 37. The Abergavenny rinks took some time to get on the scoreboard which eventually led to defeat for all three. Rink scores were John Whomersley 17 – 24, Maurice Padfield 12 – 22 and John Newell 8 – 33.
Fixtures coming up over the next week include a mixed team friendly against St Martins Hereford tomorrow. This is followed by Mixed League fixture against Blaina on Friday, both of which are at Avenue Road. The ladies will try to continue their unbeaten run when they visit Caerleon for their next game. On Saturday the GBL team travel to Caldicot for a league game whilst other club members will contest a knockout competition on our own green.
