Abergavenny Bowls Club played three league games in the past week, the first of which was a ladies game at Croesyceiliog. Each team won on one rink, with Croesyceiliog managing to secure overall victory by the narrow margin of two shots, 24 to 22.
The winning rink for Abergavenny was that of Mary Evans. They secured victory by scoring three shots on the penultimate end to win by 12 shots to 11. The rink of Clare Morgan scored five shots over the final three ends but could not quite overcome their deficit, losing by 13 shots to 10.
The MBA team played their second league game of the season when they visited Machen last Saturday. Unfortunately, it was another reversal when all four rinks went down to lose the game by88 shots to 48.
John Beaton’s rink reduced their twelve-shot deficit over the final third of the game but eventually lost by 20 shots to 16. The rink of Peter Steed was involved in a close game until the final five ends, during which their opponents scored nine shots, without reply to win by 20 shots to 10.
On Gethin Hill’s rink, their opponents took control in the middle third of the game to build an unassailable lead which led to victory by 22 shots to 14. Unfortunately, the rink of Matthew Vale never got into the game, losing by 28 shots to eight.
The only success in the week was the victory for the GBL team when Blaina were the visitors to Avenue Road. They won on all three rinks to record a victory by 56 shots to 35, securing maximum league points in the process.
The rink of Malcolm Powell was eight shots down after the first five ends but then drew level at nine all after twelve ends. The Abergavenny rink then did not allow their opponents to score again over the final ends to win by 20 shots to nine. The game on the rink of Clare Morgan was fairly close for twelve ends. However, the Abergavenny rink then gained the advantage to win by 16 shots to 11. John Whomersley’s rink built a ten-shot lead over the first eight ends. They then conceded nine shots over the third quarter of the game but regained control over the final quarter to win by 20 shots to 15.
This week the club will play a Mixed League game at Barry Athletic. The EMBA team will play a league game on Friday evening against Chepstow at home and the on Saturday the MBA team will play a Carruthers Shield game against RTB Ebbw Vale at Avenue Road. The ladies also have a scheduled league game next Tuesday at Beechwood Park.
