Acle United Review Of The Year - Part One

As 2013 draws to a close, we look back at the past twelve months. In part one, we focus on the second part of the 2012-13 season.

January
Bad weather in January, meant United only played two games in the opening month of 2013. A Ricky Hodds goal gave Acle a share of the spoils at Blofield and this was followed up with a 9-0 demolition of Hempnall, a week later, at Bridewell Lane. Ricci Butler leading the way with 4 goals, Adam Hipperson a brace and goals for Ricky Forder, Dan Foreman and Luke Goreham.

February
After two weeks of inactivity, Acle coasted to a 4-0 home victory over Kirkley and Pakefield Res. Hipperson completing another brace, with the other goals from Darren Cockrill and Forder. A week later, the team visited Walmer Road for a Mummery Cup tie and goals from Butler and Forder, kept the A's on course for a league and cup double. The final two games in February were against fellow title contenders Cromer Town and Spixworth. Both games ended in 2-2 draws. Butler and Howell scoring against Cromer and Butler and Forder against Spixworth.

March
All four games in March were played at home, with United winning three and drawing one. Dersingham Rovers were beaten 3-2 (Butler, Forder and Randell), whilst Wroxham Res were easily dispatched 6-1 with Hipperson scoring a hat-trick, Bell, Butler and Dan Foreman completing the rout.
Reepham Town held Acle to a 1-1 draw, Forder scoring for the A's and in the final March game, Loddon United were thrashed 5-0. Butler scoring three, Forder and Randell scoring the others.

April
Still unbeaten in 2013, Acle remained so in April after winning 7 out of 7 games played. Beccles Town were beaten 3-0 on Easter Monday (Butler 2 and Hipperson), while Wroxham Res were defeated 2-0, Butler scoring a brace. An evening trip to Sheringham proved fruitful with the Shannocks on the end of a 7-1 hiding. Butler again was the main destoyer scoring four, Hipperson two and one from Goreham. The return fixture at Beccles saw Cockrill and Forder goals give United a 2-0 victory and three days later, it was St Andrews turn to taste defeat, as goals from Butler 2, Hodds and Hyde sealed victory without reply. The final two games in April saw Mattishall defeated 2-1 (Butler and Hodds) in a hard fought game, before Kirkley and Pakefield were beaten 4-2 (Forder 2, Hipperson and Nobbs) at Walmer Road.

May
Saturday 4th May 2013, a day to remember in the history of Acle United Football Club. A 5-0 victory over North Walsham at Greens Road meant Acle had captured the Sterry Cup for the first time. Ricci Butler's hat-trick and strikes from Goreham and Howell sparked celebrations on this historic occasion. Three day later; Trafford Park the venue, Spixworth the opponents, the Mummery Cup Final. Goals from Butler 2, Forder and Hipperson ensured Acle had completed the league and cup double in their centenary season, after Spixworth were downed 4-2. And finally onto the final game of the season. A large crowd saw Acle defeat Mattishall 2-1 (Scott Foreman and Hodds) as a jubilant Acle side collected the Sterry and Mummery Cups from the Anglian Combination officials. A run of 20 games unbeaten (16 wins and 4 draws) in 2013 and Acle last tasted defeat on 3rd November 2012, a run of 25 games.
