A crown emblem can be found on the left sleeve of both the Royals’ home and away kits to mark the club being presented a prestigious award in the Queen’s name.
In 2011, AFC Portchester won The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service - the MBE for voluntary groups, presented to mark their work in the local community for the benefit of others.
And in the 11 years which have followed, the Royals have shown off the award with pride - proudly displaying it in the boardroom for visitors at The OnSite Group Stadium to see.
This season the logo for the awards can be found on the left sleeve of both the orange home kit and light blue away kit - meaning that despite her passing at the age of 96, and with the nickname of The Royals, it seems very appropriate that the immensely popular monarch will be remembered every time the team takes to the pitch.
Mark Greenham, chairman of AFC Portchester when the club received news of it winning the award, said at the time: “We are thrilled to have received this prestigious honour for the work we do with AFC Portchester in the local community.”
The club received the award for supporting access to football for all ages and spearheading local charity fundraising activities.
The prestigious national honour recognises outstanding voluntary contributions and sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering, with the work of those groups receiving the award being judged to be of the highest standard.
AFC Portchester received a certificate signed by The Queen and an exclusive commemorative crystal - both of which have remained on display in the club’s boardroom since 2011.
These were presented to the club at the time by Her Majesty's representative in Hampshire, Dame Mary Fagan, and a group of club officials were also invited to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace that summer.
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service committee chairman, Martyn Lewis, commented at the time: “Volunteer groups make such an important contribution to their communities, often without praise for the incredible job they do.
“It’s a pleasure to celebrate the achievements of AFC Portchester with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and give official recognition for the benefits they bring to others’ lives.”
