Although the sun was shining, the pitch looked like the rain had just come down as both penalty areas were muddy with pools of water, however with a light wind it was perfect conditions for football and both teams were keen for the game to go ahead. The ref gave the green light.
We fielded a pretty much unchanged side from our previous fixture, but after having had a couple of weeks due to postponement we seemed a little flat for some reason. The pitch was quite uneven so the game was disjointed and it was a challenge to get 5 passes together so it was unsurprising the football was a bit sporadic. We were having the better of the play with Dom Hemblade particularly causing problems down the left wing and Alfie Mitchell also working well on the right. Chances were few and far between so it was a reliable source that opened the scoring as Matt Waterman turned his man on the right hand side of the area cut inside and fired an accurate shot into the far corner giving the Southwick keeper no chance. The second followed quickly after a Joe Keehan bundled into the area and after falling face first the ball rebounded out to Matt who slammed home for his brace.
We thought that more goals would come but a combination of poor finishing and a hard working Southwick side who kept going to the last minute meant the score remained the same. Joe Keehan, Lol Edwards and Luke Manley all had clear cut opportunities which went begging and a Matt waterman free kick that was nearer the moon than the goal summed up our second half. Harry Heath was Southwick's stand out player and his incisive running and determination was unlucky not to be rewarded.
