After a fine winter futsal period the U14 squad travelled to Cardiff to compete in the National Finals competition organised by the FAW and the Welsh Football Trust.
Competing along side the Wingmakers were South Wales sides Port Talbot Town, Cambrian & Clydach and North Wales winners The New Saints.
The day opened up for the Wingmakers with a semi final tie against a previously unbeaten Port Talbot Town side. After a nervous start, Airbus soon clicked into gear and were comfortably 6-1 up at half time thanks to a Cain Noble hat trick and goals from George Peers, Toby Vickery and Dylan Allshorn. The second period saw the wingmakers slow out of the blocks again as Port Talbot clawed a goal back, but it was the re-introduction of George Peers that saw Airbus through as his influence and another neat close range finish saw the young wingmakers restore their 5 goal cushion. Port Talbot needed again with a couple of minutes remaining, but at that point the game was over as a contest and the Academy had their first National Futsal finalists.
The final saw a repeat of the Northern Final at the end of January, with ourselves and TNS facing off. The first half saw TNS come out of the blocks quicker and Darren Evans slotted home to open the scoring. After some fabulous build up play, the young wingmakers were level. A fantastic six pass move was converted at the back post by Cain Noble, but the joy was short lived and TNS danger man Jack Vale soon had the Saints back in front, despite Airbus beginning to claim the momentum and create the majority of the chances.
The second half began as the first finished with Airbus on top and creating numerous chances. Connor Randall and Will Evans both went close before another fine move saw Oli Lanceley tap home from close range to level the game again with 15 minutes remaining. The decisive momentum swing happened minutes later as a well worked set piece routine was turned into the net by a TNS defender. This gave the wingmakers a lead they were never to surrender. Further goals were added by Will Evans, Cain Noble and George Peers as Airbus began to turn the final into a rout. But all credit to TNS they continued to make the game competitive and fashioned a couple of chances of their own.
In the end however, it was the wingmakers who were celebrating as the final whistle sounded. All credit must go to the players as they worked their socks off to accomplish this feat. The futsal silverware adds to an already impressive season for the U14 as they add to the 3rd place at the Keele Cup, Loch Lomond Tournament winners and a 1st Place finish in the academy cup league stage.
The squad will now turn their attention to an academy cup quarter final against Bangor City.
