Alloa were well outgunned at Earlsfield by last season's divisional champions, Dundee University Medics.
Short of a few key players injured the previous week at Glenrothes, the home side fell behind to an early penalty goal before Lee Cairney squeezed over in the corner for the game's opening try. However the students were showing ominous signs in attack especially off turnover ball and racked up four tries to merit the bonus point within the first 25 minutes. They stretched further clear before Alloa pulled a score back before the break, Stuart Milligan picking up and driving over from close in.
Half time Alloa 10 Dundee University Medics 34
The second half very much followed the pattern of the first with Alloa falling off tackles and the Uni clinical in finishing once they got in behind the home defence. Alloa's only moment of joy was a second Lee Cairney try which the Alloa winger converted himself.
Alloa were well served by their finishing back row of Dale Foster, Gary Taylor and Daniel McGookin and centre Dan Small made some good breaks in midfield.
While the scoreline was hugely disappointing, Alloa did play well in phases and will rue not converting chances close to the Dundee try line and will work on improving coughing up ball in the contact situation that the students profited on to good effect.
The Alloa squad will now need to dig deep and hope for an improvement on the injury front in advance of their trip to Carnoustie on Saturday.
