Alnwick recently headed to Rockcliff Whitley Bay RFC to play in the final leg of the Waterfall Cup tournament, competing for the Bowl. Gosforth RFC was also involved in the three way fixture and was Alnwick’s first opposition. The game proved immediately hard going and was looking to be a Gosforth victory, but some good thinking on the pitch by the team, meant they adjusted their play to meet the opposition. Through strong determination and superb defence across the pitch the team turned it back to a 5:3 win for Alnwick.
Alnwick used the game between Rockcliff and Gosforth as a good opportunity to eye up their next opponent, Rockcliff, who defeated Gosforth convincingly.
Buoyed by their initial victory Alnwick came out confidently. Having identified who the key strong players were in Rockcliff’s team, they focused on stifling their opposition’s game by close man marking and pressure. There was some very determined match play across the whole team, which nearly resulted in a decisive try for Alnwick, but was sadly foiled on the try line by Rockcliff’s defence, resulting in a 2:2 draw.
Alnwick and Rockcliff had both won and drawn a game, but sadly the Bowl was won by Rockcliff as it came down to the number of tries scored over all the games.
However Alnwick left happy in the knowledge they are unbeaten in three games, a great confidence booster for their approaching tour. Well done Boys!
