Matty Potts clinched a unique hat trick of awards ......

at Ashington Cricket Club’s presentation ceremony last week.

The all rounder scooped the Player of the Year, Players Player of the Year and batter of the Year for the second eleven.

For 23 year old Potts, it was a season to remember after he rejoined the Langwell Crescent Club from Warkworth.

Alnwick-born Potts began with the junior section at Ashington and served the club for nine years. He progressed into the second team captained by his father Doug and played for three years during which time Ashington won the league twice as well as the League Cup.

Potts joined Warkworth for two seasons before returning to the Wansbeck outfit in 2021: “I went to Warkworth to develop my game and to score runs,” he said, “It was good to come back and it’s been a decent season – although batting wise I reckon I missed out on scoring a hundred. I’ve got a couple of things to work on during the winter – but already I’m looking forward to next term.”

Potts – who received a first team call towards the end of the season - was taken by surprise at the awards: “I thought I had a chance of winning the batting award but I didn’t expect all three,” he said, “I’m over the moon – but all of the lads have been class and I was pleased to get called up to the first team and to experience another level.”

Second eleven skipper Josh Robinson said: “Matty was excellent all season with bat and ball. I was delighted with his performances and he fully deserved his awards. He initially knocked on the door for the first team – then squeezed himself in towards the end – so that says it all.”

Alex Storey took the other award for the second XI as bowler of the year.
