McCAFFERTY: “WE HAD NOT GAME PLAN TO COUNTER BOSISTO”

brian bennett4 Aug 2019 - 23:05

Ashington Cricket Club’s first XI skipper Sean McCafferty ......

said his side could not come up with an answer to counter Willington spinner Will Bosisto in Saturday’s six wickets defeat against the Durham outfit. Bosisto ended with glowing figures of 6-21 from 14.1 overs and McCafferty said: “I lost the toss which was disappointing because I wanted to bowl first. We didn’t start well, losing Jack Jessop lbw and then Cameron Steel followed soon after. We managed to pull ourselves back into the game a little bit through Adam Nichol and myself but then lost wickets at the wrong time. Willington had a spinner (Bosisto) who came on and we didn’t really have a game plan against him. The wicket was turning and the ball spinning but we sat there and let him bowl – and eventually he is going to get you out.” After being 74-6 at one stage, Ashington were bowled out for 117 and McCafferty added: “I think 150 would have been a competitive score. I would have been happy with that but we were a little bit short after making 117. I was disappointed with our batting but with the current weather, it’s been difficult to get into a rhythm as a batter with games being on and off. There are no excuses - we just weren’t good enough.” The skipper was however pleased with the effort in the field: “With the ball I thought we started very well and were unlucky,” he said, “A couple of things could have gone our way. There was a lot of ‘playing and missing’ and a few balls chipped up into the air which didn’t go to hand. On another day we might have had them (Willington) 50-6 but today it just wasn’t meant to be.”
