Stalemate Sees The Town Back in Bottom Three

Relegation-threatened Ashton Town drew 0-0 in at The hebs Group Stadium, seeing them fall back into the dropzone of the NWCFL First Division North.

In a week when the club went viral, due to an image of a burger served at the ground surfacing, 309 supporters were appetised by an entertaining game – albeit devoid of goals.

The Town came into this fixture having lost just two of their last five league fixtures and on the back of a hard-fought 1-0 win over Daisy Hill, as well as a battling 1-1 draw with Atherton LR, respectively, they looked the livelier of the two sides, on this occasion.

In a first half of few chances, the home side’s best fell to the left foot of Leon Wright, who got virtually everything right throughout the match – but not on this occasion, slicing his half-volley wayward.

The Town were knocking at the South Liverpool door and so nearly battered it down, Brendan O’Brien did brilliantly to work a bit of space and thought he had beaten visiting goalkeeper Jacob McCoy all ends up when he smashed his effort towards the far corner – only to be denied by a miraculous save.

From the subsequent corner, Kevin Towey’s men went even closer, when Daniel Clarke, who had been booked for getting involved in a few melees, saw his towering header cleared off the line.

South Liverpool could and perhaps should have taken advantage of this, when Darryl Mvalo latched onto a ball over the top, but like Wright, got his effort all wrong.

The Town dominated much of the second-half, but it was Martin Ryman’s men who had perhaps the best chance of the entire match, when Oscar Billington turned his man and rattled the post.

Ashton Town replied just moments later, when the impressive Luke Edwards unleashed a vicious volley from distance, only to hit the side netting.

Desperate times called for desperate measures, The Town needed a goal and with 12 minutes remaining, player-manager Towey came on.

With a number of vital goals to his name this season, the gaffer was looking to provide, linking up well with Edwards – who, again, came so close to opening the scoring, but shot just wide.

For all of his class, Edwards just couldn’t find the net – seeing his deflected effort bend narrowly wide, at the death.

The result, coupled with Nelson’s emphatic 3-0 win over Runcorn Town sees the home side back below the dreaded dotted line ahead of Tuesday night’s home match against league leaders Pilkington, while South Liverpool are 10th.
