Mike Murray RIP

Pat Stokes10 Feb 2025 - 04:59

It is with deep sadness and regret that we have to share the news that club legend Mike Murray passed away on the 6th February, aged 75.

First and foremost Mike was a family man; a devoted husband and father and we send our heartfelt condolences and love to Caz, Leanne, Joe and Sam and Mike’s extended family and friends.

Mike was a rugby colossus, he had a stellar rugby career - including playing at Loughborough University, Wasps, Manchester, Sale, Cheshire and Ashton on Mersey. Mike’s impact when he joined Ashton in the early 80s was immense and immediate. It was no coincidence that this sparked a tremendously successful spell for the club with numerous promotions and not too many losses. He wasn’t bad at football either….he played for England schools!

Mike was 1st XV captain for 2 seasons (1983-85) and club president for 11 years (1999- 2010). He was a charismatic leader, a wise mentor, a great player, a great coach, a great man and great company. He will be missed by so many at Ashton and his many friends across the wider rugby family.

Mike’s teaching career was equally successful and notable. Teaching Physical Education and Sports Science at William Hulme Grammar and Loreto College. He continued working well into his retirement years; writing textbooks, setting exams, marking exams and working with the respective examination boards.

Mike Murray RIP.

Details of Mike’s funeral arrangements will be shared once announced.
