After making a big step forward in their push for promotion with victory over Stonesfield, the lions were looking to make it back to back wins since the winter break. This week they were away to an Eynsham side sitting just above the relegation places. After the scare Eynsham gave the reds in the cup, they would need to have their heads on the game to avoid any potential slip ups.

Again going with a 4-4-2 formation the team that started the game was the gaffer in goal, with Edney, Harriss, Rowe and Wain across the back. Angus started right wing, Beer and Evans centrally, with Fleming left wing. Colleton and Lewis lead the line.

The weather has been causing havoc with pitches all over the Witney & District but Eynshams had held up surprisingly well considering. The large pitch is perfect for the reds passing game and hopefully they could put this to good use.
The lions picked up where they left off in the Stonesfield game. There is a hunger and unity in the squad that has been missing in previous seasons, and everyone is fighting for each other to make this season hopefully a success. The opening stage of the first half, although dominated by Aston, was not quite clicking in the final third. The pitch was cutting up quickly and crosses and last passes were either over hit or going astray. Eynsham also lost their talisman after 25 minutes to a hamstring injury, which was closely followed by another hamstring injury to their centre back. Not ideal for the home side to lose 2 players in quick succession and it was only to get worse. Fleming and Angus were getting a lot of joy down the wings, and it was here the opening goal arrived. Fleming beat his man wide left and drove to the corner. He over hit his cross to the far side where Angus picked up the ball. Beating his man he drilled the ball low, where Evans was waiting to tap in from close range 0-1 Aston.
This gave Aston the lift they needed to start showing some cutting edge and it wasn’t long before they had their second and it was a screamer. Pressing high was making Eynsham kick long and return the ball to the reds. Winning the ball back on half way Harriss found Colleton on the half turn. He moved the ball onto Evans who was in a pocket of space. With Fleming free on the left Evans ignored the run and let fly from 25 yards putting top corner. 0-2 Aston. There was still time to throw a cat among the pigeons, with Eynshams midfielder getting a bit catty and clawing Fleming, after taking offence to an insult about his size. It is all fur he said whilst pawing tears away from his eyes. This was the last bit of excitement of the half, and Aston in a good position going into the 2nd half.

Even though his side had played well the gaffer gave a cautious speech. His side threw away a lead in the cup fixture, so he did not want another error ridden 2nd half and wanted the same drive and determination for another 45 minutes. His side didn’t disappoint him.

Aston hit the ground running and within 5 minutes they had their 3rd goal. A nicely weighted through ball was played by Edney into the path of Colleton. With only the keeper to beat, he rounded him with ease and finished in off the post. 0-3 Aston.
The game then got a little scrappy with the pitch becoming more difficult to play on and Aston knowing the game was pretty much won. Cade came on for Fleming with 30 minutes remaining, with Angus moving to the left and Cade playing wide right. Aston made it 4 nil from the penalty spot. Angus outpaced the Eynsham defender to a loose ball and was clipped as he just got there first. Evans stepped up and finished to complete his hat-trick. Lewis was then subbed for the ‘love doctor’ Kennedy, who had the most amount of shots without scoring in a 5 minute period I have ever witnessed. He did finally get his goal from his 100th effort after 6 minutes of coming on when Angus pulled the ball back for him to finish into the corner. 0-5 Aston.
Not to be outdone by his midfield partner Evans’s effort in the first half, Beer then decided to get in on the act. Winning the ball back 25 yards out, he pushed it onto his weaker left foot and drove the ball straight into the top corner. A rasper and 0-6 Aston.
The stuffing had well and truly been knocked out of the home side and there was still time for the reds to get a final goal to complete the rout. Again Angus pace was causing trouble and a sharp run down the left allowed him to cut the ball back for Colleton to get his 2nd of the game. 0-7 Aston and full time.

A well-earned victory for the team and a clean sheet to go with it. The win puts the lads top on goal difference with 2 games in hand. Another solid display from all involved, but with 3 goals to his name and a battling effort in the midfield Evans just edged the MOM award from Angus. Next fixture is a home game vs Tower Hill Stars in the league.
