Aston came into this game in buoyant mood following the resounding victory over Eynsham last weekend. It was an impressive performance by the reds and kept them top of the pile on goal difference coming into this weekend. This week the team faced an unpredictable quantity in the figure of Tower Hill Stars, but would be looking to continue their impressive form, and with other games called off they could give themselves a 3 point cushion still with a game in hand.

To the gaffers disbelief that this would ever happen, he was able to name exactly the same starting 11 as the week before, with only the 3 subs slightly being altered. He started himself in goal, with Edney, Harriss, Rowe and Wain making up the back 4. Across the midfield was Angus, Beer, Evans and Fleming Snr, with Colleton and Lewis up top. The 2 and a 1/2 subs were Cade, Fleming Jr, and Daniel (and I quote "I will only come on if someones leg has fallen off") Molony.

Although the pitch looked in okay condition both teams knew that it wouldn’t be long before it would start cutting up, which would make for a long tough afternoon. With this in mind the home side started brightly and were trying to still play their football as best as they could. Most of the yellows (in the away kit this week) best work came down both flanks with Fleming and Angus causing the away sides full backs lots of problems, and it was here where the opening goal came from. Playing out from the back Wain picked the ball up in the left back position. Fleming span in behind the full back, where Wain clipped a lovely ball in behind. Latching onto the ball he took the ball past the retreating defender. Slightly scuffing his shot he cut it into the near post bottom corner to score. 1-0 Aston.
The lions did not have to wait very long to extend their lead, and it was completed in the most beautiful of choreographic fashion, which Louis Spence would have been proud of. Again coming down the homes sides left, Fleming held the ball up to allowing Wain to burst past him on the overlap. Laying the ball into the space Wain rushed onto the pass and crossed first time. Lewis couldn’t quite head towards goal but managed to cushion it back for the free Colleton. Swinging and missing, he completed the most elegant of pirouettes, only to see the ball still at his feet. Taking a 2nd bite at it he stroked the ball into the bottom corner. 2-0 Aston.
The lions were in cruise control, but Stars were soon to give them a scare with a comedy of errors leading to the chance. A long ball played in behind was running back to Edwards in his box. The retreating Harriss chased the ball to usher it back and hold off the Stars striker. As Edwards went to collect Harriss decided he would take Edwards on, and with this the Stars striker nicked the ball of him. With bodies flying everywhere to get up, Rowe just managed to get back and block the ball. More bodies flying everywhere to retrieve the loose ball and it finally got cleared. A wake up call for the lads. Stars also had a penalty decision waved away, which was never in doubt as the away side winger slipped over, with Beer going full Megatron and telling him to get up or he would see the dark side of the moon. These near misses kicked Aston back into life and with 10 mins left in the 1st half to play Stars sucker punched themselves. A long through ball was played through the away sides defence line. With no Aston player close the keeper was coming out to collect, only for the centre back to misread the situation and attempt to pass it back. The ball was placed right past the keeper and into the empty net from 20 yards. 3-0 Aston.
With 5 minutes of the half remaining the lions pretty much killed the game off. A quick free kick by Fleming 30 yards out was played into Colleton inside the Stars box. A neat turn inside fooled the defender, and with his initial shot blocked he then finished it off into the far corner nicely. 4-0 Aston, and this was the score line at HT.

A very good half from the home side, even if it wasn’t for the state of the pitch. Edwards was pleased with what he had seen and the character the team had showed to pick up where they left off last week. The only thing that could affect the team now was complacency and the gaffer wasn’t going to allow that. Stay on the front foot and keep pushing on was the call of the day, and no silly bookings / sending offs (Pabs).

The home side continued on the front foot in the 2nd half without creating anything clear cut in the first 15 minutes. The best chance fell to an unlikely source. Aston set up for a corner, and with Rowe making a late arrival into the box the ball landed to him free to head home. He defended the attacking corner fantastically and cleared it well over the bar. He was subbed minutes later for an unrelated reason and Cade joined the field of play. Slight reshuffle with Edney going into centre back, Angus to right back and Cade going right wing.
Colleton signed off before his 3 week sabbatical to New Zealand by completing his TAP-trick and notching his 16 of the season. Neat build up play allowed a through ball to be played in for Lewis to run onto. Unable to finish himself he slid and stroked the ball across goal. Colleton had the freedom of Aston to tap home from 3mm’s out. 5-0 Aston and Colleton scoring all of his goal from a combined distance of 3.003m. The lions then made another change with Fleming Jr coming on for the Beer in central midfield.
With 15 minutes left to play Colleton then teed Fleming Snr up for his 2nd of the game. Again the yellows continued to play on the torn up pitch. A quick break found Colleton free on the edge of the area. The stars defence didn’t close him down quickly enough and he clipped a lovely ball in for the onrushing Fleming. He bought it down well and placed the ball into the far corner. 6-0 Aston.
Soon after Aston completed the rout making it two 7 nil wins in 2 weeks. A couple of 1-2’s between Colleton and Fleming Snr were worked well down Aston’s left. Evans found himself free centrally and Colleton played him a short pass. He curled the ball low, which just had enough on it to get past the diving keepers palm and into the net. 7-0 Aston and Full time.

A great team effort, with another big win and 2 clean sheets in a row. A lot of good performances on show, but signing off in style with 3 goals and 2 assists was Fish and he takes MOM. Outright leaders now by 3 points, still with a game in hand. Keep pushing on boys, and let’s not rest on our laurels.
